Van Wert Teachers Support One Another during Mediation

Wednesday, December, 27, 2017

Van Wert educators from area elementary, middle, and high schools held a rally outside of their school buildings to show their disapproval for what they believe to be unfair negotiations.  The bargaining sessions began in July, but there is still no new contract.

Most recently, the union voted to only working during hours covered by their contract until a new deal is struck.  Working from bell to bell, means nobody will be arriving early to prepare for class or staying late to plan.   According to union president Jeff Hood, this will show unity and that the teachers are serious about wanting to reach a contract agreement.  It is also supposed to demonstrate to the community what the problem is.

Says Hood, “… we are dissatisfied with the way contract talks are going”.

Teachers are asking for “competitive pay and benefits ”.   According to data Hood has collected, there is a carryover in the budget.  He said, the teachers are not there to make a lot of money, and they are there for the lifestyle and the purpose.  Unfortunately, he and the other union members are still not happy with anything they have been offered, especially because insurance is now so expensive.

While the Hood notes that the union is aware that higher compensation will come with possible health care premium increases for teachers, there are certain undisclosed proposals that are being bargained that the teachers are not willing to negotiate on.

The board is fully committed to reaching an agreement and ensuring that teachers can get back to work and do the work they are being paid to do.
