Divorce Mediation: Maryland Divorce Relatively Rare

Friday, June, 10, 2011

Divorce mediation: Maryland and Washington, D.C., as it turns out, are two places in the nation where divorce is relatively rare.  When compared to all the other states, both the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia have the fewest divorces per year.  The data was provided by the National Vital Statistic System, which is run by the federal government.

According to the numbers, the average divorce rate in the United States is 3.4 divorces per year for every thousand people.  In Maryland, however, the target number is 2.8 and in Washington, D.C., it falls to 2.6, the lowest rate in the nation.  Both locations have had a divorce rate lower than that of the nation as a whole since 2005.

Divorce Mediation: Maryland and Other States Allow for It

Divorcing, of course, is rarely a pleasant prospect for the parties involved.  Thanks to modernizing legislation in the past few decades, however, couples that do choose to divorce have more options than ever before.  Instead of a court-based process that is time-consuming and often very costly for both husband and wife, couples can choose to undergo divorce via mediation.  This provides a cooperative process in which the spouses, with the help of a mediation attorney, work together to settle issues such as who will get the house, how will child custody be arranged, and what kind of alimony or child support will be included in the divorce settlement.
