Divorce Mediation Costs Attractive to Divorcing Couples

Friday, July, 8, 2011

Divorce mediation costs can come as a welcome surprise to some couples unfamiliar with the process.  They may assume that mediation itself does nothing but add one more paid professional into the process of dissolving a marriage.  It is understandable that with this scenario in mind, people might believe that a mediated divorce will cost them more, not less, in terms of total outlay.

The truth, however, is just the opposite.  A mediation attorney can actually help a couple save significant sums of money because the process of mediation is swifter and smoother than traditional litigation.  By helping a couple get through their financial and child care differences, a mediation attorney produces a scenario in which the husband and wife will need fewer hours with individual divorce attorneys that take an antagonistic point of view towards one another.

Divorce Mediation Costs Lower Because of Process

Indeed, this is the entire purpose of a mediation attorney: to help the couple come to an equitable agreement.  In contrast, traditional divorce lawyers have a goal of helping the spouse they represent get as much of the marital asset pool as possible.  Since each spouse's lawyer has this goal, it leads to long, drawn-out divorces in which the couple fights for every last cent, and ends up paying a large part of their assets to the attorneys doing the fighting. Divorce mediation along with civil mediation can also produce considerable savings over lawsuits.
