Divorce Mediation Costs Prove Appealing During Slow Economy

Wednesday, October, 5, 2011

Divorce mediation costs are being seen as increasingly advantageous in this time of tough economic decisions.  When couples have limited discretionary income but the dissolution of the marriage becomes a necessity, they may decide that it is unwise to undergo an expensive court-based divorce in which they each hire an attorney and battle for every last cent.  In such a scenario, it is often true that legal bills become so high that neither party benefits greatly from the divorce settlement.

Divorce Mediation Costs More Reasonable

A more rational alternative is to undergo a mediated divorce.  Couples in previous decades may not have heard of this option, and with their personal finances strong, it may not have occurred to them to seek a lower cost alternative to traditional divorce, but the alternative does exist and is growing in popularity.

This trend toward mediation divorce is being reported in St. Louis, Missouri, but there is reason to believe that couples across the United States are now seeing mediation as a valid way to dissolve a marriage.  There may be two different elements feeding into this trend.  First, the need to save money is a potent driving force, but second, the economic downturn itself is creating new levels of stress for many couples – stress that in fact, can shift a faltering relationship from the endangered category to the divorcing column, sometimes making conflict mediation as well as a divorce a necessity.
