Fate of YMCA Building Unsure Amidst Mediation

Wednesday, June, 7, 2017

The old YMCA building on Bridge Street in Frankfort continues to be a problem for John and Martha Gray and the city.   Nobody is sure yet what will happen to the building, despite the couple and the city agreeing to a post-mediation arrangement.

In November, a Circuit court judge ordered the couple and the city to mediation.   The mediation was at least a partial succeeding and resulted in an agreement for the city to purchase the property surrounding the building for $60,000.   It also ended to potential for litigation in the matter.   The Grays own the YMCA building on the property and Gray stated that he would hear an offer from the city concerning the building as part of the mediation agreement, but was not necessarily accepting the offer.   In January, the city filed a motion to compel compliance with the agreement.

According to the motion, the Grays have failed and refused to implement or comply with the mediation agreement and to execute documents pursuant to the agreement.   At the time, the Grays were given until the end of January to state their objections to the motion, which they did, arguing the city had not specified what it thought the agreement required regarding the Old Y building.

In 2007, the city considered demolishing the Old Y building, but Gray purchased it to save it from demolition.   His intention was to convert it to a boutique hotel.   They YMCA had left the building in 1971.   The property is now condemned and has been involved in litigation over the last several years, and was designated an imminent danger by the city in September 2016.
