Wichita Headed to Mediation Over Parking Garage Dispute

Friday, October, 23, 2015

The dispute between Crossland Construction and the City of Wichita over a parking garage project could soon be coming to an end. The project relates to the parking garage at Eisenhower National Airport and concerns compliance issues with the contract and construction schedule. Both sides have raised issues.

The project involves a parking garage, rental car facility, and surface lot, all of which were part of a contract awarded to Crossland Construction in 2013 by the Wichita Airport Authority.

The budget and approved cost of the final project was $40 million, according to the director of airports. Payments included $25 million worth of 30-year bonds repair from airport revenue, as well as $5 million in facility charges from rental cars and $10 million in airport cash.

Despite the garage and rental car facility opening prior to the new terminal in June, but the project was not completed by the target date. Now, there are disputes concerning the time frame and payments, which mediation could hopefully resolve.

The mediation is scheduled for the end of October. The process is voluntary and neither side has begun any move toward litigation concerning the dispute. Both sides seem optimistic that mediation could produce positive results and are entering into the process willing and able to negotiate. Both parties have identified outstanding issues concerning the contract, which everyone agrees is fairly common. There have been no details given publicly thus far concerning the contract issues. Any additional payments made will become a matter of public record going forward.
