Born in Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania; High School Valedictorian; awarded an  NROTC 4 year scholarship; attended, and graduated from, the University of Rochester with a  B.A.in History Honors and a U.S.  Navy Commission (Regular) as an Ensign; after 8 weeks training at the U.S. Navy Mine Warfare School In  Yorktown, Va., reported aboard the U. S.S. Fidelity (MSO- 443) off-shore Beirut, Lebanon; promoted Lt (j. g.) 18 months later, and continued to serve on that ship until released from active duty on July 14, 1961, including being off the Florida coast locating used space rocket shells for recovery, the  Cuban coast, just after the Bay of Pigs landing,  and the Dominion Republic coast  when Dictator Rafael Trujillo was assassinated; I attended, being the grateful recipient of Pennsylvania Senatorial  Scholarships, the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia; received my Law Degree (upper third of class); was admitted to the Ohio Bar, joined the law firm now known as Hahn, Loeser & Parks, LLP, and  then married; have 3 children (2 lawyers, 1 Ph.D. medicinal chemist)  and 6 grandchildren; presently own a home in Beachwood, Ohio;  after 10 years of service in the U.S. Navy (3 years active, 5 years active reserve and 2 inactive), received an Honorable Discharge as a Lieutenant, on Nov. 27, 1968; became a law firm Partner in 1972; later served as Chair of the firm’s litigation department;  in the course of this practice, helped found the Attorneys’ Liability Assurance Society (a nationwide, self-insurer malpractice insurance company, a company for mid-sized and larger law firms); retired from Hahn Loeser after more than 35  years, but I still maintain my arbitration and mediation practice.

 
Member, former Trustee and President of the Ohio Historical Society; former Trustee of the Ohio Humanities Council; former Trustee, Member and President of the Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument Commission at Cleveland  Public Square (studied, initiated, and completed the preservation and restoration of the Monument’s interior in 2010); Former Chairman, Board of Trustees, Presbytery of the Western Reserve; Member and Trustee of the English Speaking Union and the Early Settlers Association of the Western Reserve, and  a Member of the Western Reserve Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

My practice consisted of representing many different businesses,landlords, insurance companies, contractors  and not-for-profit entities (ranging from a major art museum to a small chamber orchestra), mostly in litigation but also as a counselor, advisor, sometimes as an officer and/or Board Member, with respect to civil law, insurance, trusts, real estate, real estate taxation, and other business matters; I tried lawsuits; handled appeals in all Ohio courts, includingthe 6th Circuit Court of Appeals; taught insurance law, as an adjunct professor, at the Western Reserve and Cleveland State University  Colleges of Law; was regularly selected and appointed to serve  as an arbitrator in many cases  for the American Arbitration Association.
