Mediation Will Determine If Camel Trains Can Move to a Different Part of Cable Beach

Wednesday, September, 27, 2017

An application submitted by three camel ride operators on Cable Beach has been rejected by the court.   The applications sought to move the tours from north of the rocks to south of Broome Surfe Life Saving Club ramp.   Now, the issue will head to mediation.

The dispute was appealed to the State Administrative Tribunal.   The tribunal recommended those involved in the dispute meet to mediate the matter and find a united position that helps them resolve the issue.

The three providers involved, Red Sun Camels, Sundowner Camel Tours, and Broome Camel Safaris, made the request in April.   The court turned the requests down as a matter of policy and local laws.

According to owner of Red Sun Camels, John Geappen, “The current local law and policy is not in line with community and visitor expectations.  ”

The three business owners have agreed to participate in the mediation sessions.   They were originally hoping to run their camel trains 1.5 km south of the beach access ramp.   Public vehicles are prohibited in this area.   According to the owners, the existing location is hazardous to the camels and to the tourist customers they accommodate because of dangerous rocks that are exposed by the tides in the area.

They also stated there are too many vehicles in the area and that their camels are often chased by dogs.   They stated these factors present an “unacceptable risk to safety.  ”

There is also concern from the owners over a section of beach where nudists tend to sunbathe.

According to Geappen, the owners wanted to move their trains to a part of the beach that is underutilized and in their opinion, far more conducive and safe for their customers.   He suggested the move be attempted on a 30 day trial basis.
