Namibian Officials Define Mediation Effort a Failure

Monday, June, 20, 2011

A mediation dispute in the African Namibia has resulted in a standoff between union activist Evilastus Kaaronda and Alpheus !Naruseb, the national Minister of Lands and Resettlement.  The standoff between the two has been acrimonious with allegations of death threats just one of the problems plaguing efforts to come to an amicable agreement.

Regional Governor to Define Mediation as Impossible This Time

Cleophas Mutjavikua, who serves as the regional governor of Erongo, one of the 13 regions of Namibia, has reportedly said that he lacks the time and energy to mediate between the two because they do not appear committed to resolving their differences.

At issue is the stability of the Government Institutions Pension Fund in Namibia.  Workers believe that millions of dollars of their contributions to the fund have been lost.  They want an accounting of the fund as well as justice should it turn out that any misappropriation has occurred.  Kaaronda has threatened to sue Naruseb over the issue and has also demanded that the minister issue an apology to workers.  Should an apology not be forthcoming, the lawsuit will go forward, according to Kaaronda.
