The Do's and Dont's of Custody Mediation

Saturday, January, 15, 2011

If the thought of dealing with custody mediation, as a result of a divorce or custody dispute, sounds overwhelming, you are not alone. A custody agreement can be emotionally difficult, but the most important thing to remember about mediation for custody is that everyone involved should be focusing on what is in the best interest of the child. It's not the time to place the parents' needs over the child's.

Following a few simple dos and don'ts will help make the process a little easier and smoother. For example, don't discuss child support during the custody mediation process. There will be a time for that, which isn't when you are discussing custody arrangements. Furthermore, the child needs to have time with both parents. Rely on each parent's strengths and make arrangements based up the child's age and development.
