A federal mediation session has been scheduled to settle the dispute between workers and the Mardi Gras Casino and Resort in Nitro, West Virginia. The workers have twice voted to strike, but the deadline for negotiating a contract has again been extended so both sides will have time to meet with the federal mediator. 

The United Steelworkers Union 14614-F8 rejected the latest offer from the casino regarding health insurance. All 350 union members intended to begin striking at 5 am on Monday and told the casino they would do so unless the company decided it was ready to negotiate.

Plans to strike were halted and a union announcement was issued, stating both parties would be meeting with the federal mediator to discuss the issues further. They extended their strike deadline in light of the upcoming mediation.

Three proposals from the Mardi Gras casino company have been rejected by the union. The casino currently pays 90% of the worker health insurance premiums, but the new offer is for the casino to pay 75% and push 25% off on the workers. This would increase the out of pocket cost for workers by about $1100 per year. The union has said it would agree to a change and is willing to accept an 80/20 split.

The union has also levied claims the casino engages in unfair labor practices. In a statement issued recently, there were accusations of retaliation threats, intimidation, and attempts to undermine the union. The National Labor Relations Board has been notified.
