Long-time Australian Radio Show Comes to an End after Failed Mediation Attempt

Saturday, July, 8, 2017

The mediation attempts between the popular Film Buff’s Forecast program and Melbourne’s RRR radio station have come to an end without resolution. Due to the failed mediation attempt, the show is scheduled to air its final episode this month.

According to an announcement from RRR Programming & Content Manager Bec Hornsby, the program would not continue after it and veteran broadcaster Paul Harris were unable to reach an agreement concerning the timing of a new weekend time slot. According to Hornsby’s statement, “It was never part of the plan to ‘axe’ Film Buff’s Forecast.”

The statement further explains that the station entered mediation with Harris and utilized the services of an accredited independent mediator. The goal of mediation was to keep the program on the air and the station was willing to call in a neutral third-party to help them achieve this and to communicate as effectively as possible about the matter.

Hornsby called the mediation worthwhile and stated the practice allowed the two sides to discuss various outcomes for the show, including keeping it in its existing time slot temporarily. Harris was also offered the opportunity to add additional content online.

Despite the effort, the mediation ultimately failed.

Hornsby made it clear in his statement that he wanted Paul Harris to know how thankful the station was for 36 years of service and that the radio station listeners and those who tuned in for film reviews are grateful for all Harris has done.

More than 1300 signatures were collected from Film Buff’s Forecast’s listeners on change.org in an attempt to save the show. A Facebook group was also launched to help with the effort.
